Chevy Camaro: Build It And We Will Buy It!

Attention, General Motors! The concept Camaro now making the rounds of U.S. auto shows is a real winner. Keep showing the car, but start making plans to get it built…now! Make no changes to the concept in other words: keep the boardroom geeks away from the project. Yes, GM is looking at bringing back a venerable nameplate the Chevrolet Camaro. If all goes as planned, a 2009 model Camaro is a strong possibility. Read on for additional interesting tidbits.

Back in the late 1960s, General Motors responded albeit a little late to the wildly successful 1964 1-2 launch of the Ford Mustang. A whole new breed of cars were on the market pony cars thanks to the Mustang and GMs release of the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. Indeed, Chrysler and American Motors jumped in too with the Dodge Charger, Plymouth Road Runner, and AMC Javelin competing successfully in a popular automobile segment.

Consumer tastes have changed over the years and the Camaro did not keep up them. Better put, it was GM who did not keep up with the Camaro and it, along with the Firebird, were retired after the 2002 model year. 35 years of Camaro-Firebird history came to a bitter end.

Fortunately for Camaro lovers, it may once again be the hated Mustang that rescues the Camaro. As in the 1960s, GM is witnessing Fords big success with its retro looking Mustang and GM wants a piece of the action. Unlike GM, Ford never retired the Mustang name and, instead, gave it a complete makeover that has galvanized sales.

The Camaro making the rounds of the U.S. auto shows is a real beauty. Taking its styling cues from the 69 Camaro, the proposed 09 Camaro is expected to feature a 6.0L V8 engine paired with a 6 speed manual transmission. The wheels are 21 at the front and 22 at the back, but smaller wheels are likely to be the production standard. In addition, the Camaros interior will hearken back to the original models interior and include its famed twin instrument pod.

With a base V6 available, the standard Camaro may retail for just under $20,000, a highly competitive price for an awesome looking two door coupe. Now, if the powers that be within GM can be persuaded to build the car based on the concept, the Camaro will certainly give the Mustang a run for the money and keep the all new Dodge Challenger from swiping away Camaro loyalists.

GM Releases Final Production Images Of Chevy Volt

As a teaser to followers of its upcoming Chevy Volt hybrid coupe, General Motors has released images of the Volt, giving enthusiasts a glimpse at what has the potential to become a highly popular car.

Two Photographs Offer a Sneak Peek

Shown to the public were two photographs – the first one depicting the front left portion of the grill and headlights, the second one the rear end of the car, particularly its distinct Chevrolet bow design and Volt model insignia. Most notable among the changes were:

The headlights wrap around from the front to the side as do the fog lamps. The same grille design made popular with the 2008 Malibu and 2009 Traverse will be used in the 2011 Volt.

The rear panel of the car has been streamlined with the Chevy bow design placed directly above the Volt name the “V” in Volt receives an electric charge symbol to represent that this is, indeed, an electric car.

Production Progresses

Likely, the first Volts won’t be available in dealer showrooms before Fall 2010. GM is still working on perfecting the lithium-ion technology, a battery that is expected to give the car its 40 mile electric range. When not operating, a small gasoline engine will kick in which will extend the Volt’s range and help to recharge the battery. However, the car will have to be plugged in regularly in order for the battery to be completely recharge.

The final design version is expected to be completed in September 2008, just as the company marks its centennial anniversary. By November 2008, the production ready model will be on display at the L.A. Auto Show as it kicks off the auto show circuit. Expect that the car will be on display at shows in Detroit in January 2009 followed by Chicago in February and New York in April.

GM has asked the federal government for tax credits to help build the Volt, but that scenario isn’t likely to be addressed until after this year’s presidential elections. Both political parties have expressed interest in helping GM, but that help could be extended to buyers of the car in the form of a rebate or tax credit.
